Dear W.B. Saul High School Community:
It is with great excitement that I announce Samuel Howell as the next principal of W.B. Saul High School, effective July 1, 2022. Mr. Howell is currently the principal of the Penn Treaty School. Mr. Howell has served the Penn Treaty community as their principal since 2008. He is a product of the School District of Philadelphia, a graduate of Bodine High School, and he is thrilled at the opportunity to lead Saul High School.
Mr. Howell is a poised and strategic leader. He led Penn Treaty through a school expansion from a middle school to a middle-high school to increase continuity and expand programming for his students. Many of the programs align directly with the opportunities at Saul. He has developed Career and Technical Education opportunities as well as partnerships with outside organizations, like WHYY. Mr. Howell has led gains in academic achievement, while creating a positive school environment for students. He is committed to distributed leadership, and he is excited to work with Saul’s administrators and teachers. With more than a decade of leadership experience, he has the experience and expertise to continue to lead Saul in a way that harnesses the school’s commitment to “learn by doing,” preparing our students for success in college and careers.
Mr. Howell impressed the Principal Advisory Committee throughout all phases of our search. His initial interview included a walking tour of all parts of Saul’s campus, where he spoke with many students and teachers. He, then, interviewed on two occasions with a committee of teachers, administrators, students, and parents to assess how his past experiences align with the future of Saul. Throughout his interviews, Mr. Howell demonstrated a student-centered approach, his ability to distribute leadership, and a commitment to Saul’s partnerships and programming. The committee fully supported moving Mr. Howell forward for interviews with Chief of Schools Evelyn Nunez, Ed.D. and Chief of Talent Larisa Shambaugh, who approved his appointment as the next principal of Saul High School.
I want to extend my deep appreciation to the members of the Principal Advisory Committee for their commitment and care in this process. As we close out the school year, we will share more information about Mr. Howell’s transition to Saul. For now, please join me in welcoming Mr. Howell to the Saul community.
Sincerely,
Ted M. Domers, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent
